Gyeongju

Korea's museum without walls — the ancient Silla capital

Overview

Things to do in Gyeongju

Gyeongju was the capital of Korea's Silla kingdom for almost 1,000 years, and its grassy royal tomb mounds rise right in the middle of town. Koreans call it the museum without walls, and it is the best history stop in the country. April blossoms and October colours are the peak weeks — book stays early for both.

  • Bulguksa Temple, Korea's most celebrated Buddhist temple (UNESCO) — entry is now free since Korea scrapped temple admission fees in 2023
  • Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond after dark — Korea's best-known night view, entry around ₩3,000 ($2)
  • Walk among the Daereungwon tomb mounds, then see the Silla gold crowns at the Gyeongju National Museum (free)
  • Cheomseongdae, one of Asia's oldest surviving observatories, a short walk from the tombs

Ideal Days

One full day; stay a night to see Wolji Pond after dark

Getting there and where it fits

Gyeongju is easiest from Busan: about 30 minutes by KTX to Singyeongju station, or an hour by direct bus. From Seoul the KTX takes around 2 hours and costs about ₩50,000 ($33) one way. Singyeongju station sits outside the old town, so add 20 minutes by local bus or taxi to reach the tomb parks.

A day trip from Busan covers the highlights, but one night is better — Wolji Pond is at its best after sunset, and the tomb mounds are quiet and photogenic in the early morning. If you are riding the KTX the full length of the country, slot Gyeongju in between Busan and Seoul. See our full South Korea guide for route ideas.
