Lantau Island

Big Buddha, cable cars and Disneyland on Hong Kong's green island

Overview

Things to do in Lantau Island

Lantau is Hong Kong's biggest island — home to the airport, Disneyland, and the giant bronze Tian Tan Buddha in the hills. Families head to Disneyland; everyone else rides the cable car to the Buddha. October to March brings the clearest skies for the ride.

  • Ngong Ping 360 cable car — 25 minutes over sea and mountains; round-trip tickets from around HK$285 ($37), with crystal-floor cabins a small step up in price and worth it on a clear day
  • Tian Tan "Big Buddha" — climb the 268 steps to the 34-metre statue and visit Po Lin Monastery next door; both are free
  • Tai O fishing village — stilt houses, dried-seafood lanes and short boat rides, about 20 minutes by bus from Ngong Ping
  • Hong Kong Disneyland — the smallest Disney park, easily done in one day; it sits on the island's north-east corner with its own MTR spur

Getting there and where it fits

Lantau is easier to reach than it looks on the map. Take the MTR Tung Chung line from Central — about 30 minutes — and the cable car leaves from right beside Tung Chung station. If the cable car is closed for wind or maintenance, bus 23 from the same station climbs to Ngong Ping in about 50 minutes for around HK$30 ($4). Disneyland is a separate MTR ride via the Sunny Bay interchange, so don't try to chain it with the Buddha.

In a Hong Kong itinerary, Lantau is the standard third day: cable car up, Buddha and monastery at midday, bus to Tai O, then back to the city by evening. Since the airport is also on Lantau, the Buddha half-day fits neatly before a late flight out. See the Hong Kong country page for entry rules and the best season to plan around.
