About this experience

Benteng Willem I, popularly known as Benteng Pendem Ambarawa, is a historic 19th-century Dutch fortress located in Ambarawa, Central Java. Recently revitalized in late 2025, it has transformed from a neglected ruin into a premier educational and culinary tourist destination.

What to expect

  • A "New Look": The fort has been extensively restored with new lighting, clean red-brick architecture, and paved pathways. It is now a prime spot for night tourism, featuring glowing atmospheric views of the historic arches.
  • Dual-Use Complex: Unique among tourist sites, part of the fort is still an active working prison (Lapas Kelas IIA Ambarawa). Visitors can safely explore the northern wing, while the high-security area is clearly separated.
  • Antique Car Gallery: A collection of vintage civilian and military vehicles.
  • Culinary & UMKM Center: Food courts and shops selling local Central Javanese products.
  • Event Space: The courtyard hosts cultural performances, such as jazz concerts and traditional dance.
  • Aesthetic Photography: The fort is famous for its massive arched windows and long, "creepy-cool" corridors that were featured in the movie Soekarno
