About this experience

Sovereign Hill is a living museum that brings the story of Ballarat's gold rush era vividly to life. Spread across 15 hectares of a former gold mining site, the outdoor museum recreates an entire 1850s township — streets, laneways, shopfronts and all — for you to wander at your own pace.

The history behind it is real. When gold was first discovered here in 1851, the resulting rush transformed Ballarat from a tranquil pastoral town into a booming provincial city, drawing dreamers from around the world in search of their fortune. Walking these streets is the closest you'll get to seeing that era in motion.

More than 18 scheduled activities run throughout the day, from panning for real gold to musket firing demonstrations and traditional crafts made right in front of you. Family friendly and suited to all ages, Sovereign Hill leaves visitors with a genuine sense of Australian history and everyday life in the 1800s.

What to expect

Arrive at Sovereign Hill in Ballarat and enter the outdoor museum with your general admission ticket. From there you're free to explore the 15-hectare site, wandering the recreated township's streets and laneways among costumed characters and period buildings.

Over 18 scheduled activities take place across the day, so it's worth checking the daily program on arrival and planning around the ones you don't want to miss. Highlights include panning for real gold in the creek, watching musket firing demonstrations, and seeing boiled lollies, wheels and candles being made by hand.

Allow a full day to do the site justice, with plenty of walking involved across the grounds. The pace is entirely your own, and the variety of activities makes it easy to keep all ages engaged from opening through to close.
