Singapore Zoo

One of the World's Best Zoos

Singapore Zoo is regularly ranked among the finest zoos in the world, and a visit explains why. Set in lush rainforest in the Mandai district to the north of the city, it pioneered the 'open concept' of zoo design, in which animals are kept in spacious, naturalistic enclosures separated from visitors by hidden moats and barriers rather than bars and cages — so you seem to share the landscape with them. The result is a green, immersive park where orangutans swing freely overhead, white tigers prowl beside a stream, and elephants bathe in a river habitat. With a strong emphasis on conservation and education, beautifully landscaped grounds and a genuinely humane feel, it appeals to animal lovers and families alike. It forms part of the wider Mandai Wildlife Reserve, alongside the famous Night Safari and other parks. For many visitors, especially those travelling with children, the Singapore Zoo is among the most rewarding days out the city offers.

The Open Concept and the Animals

The open concept is the zoo's signature, and it makes for unusually close, natural encounters. Its star residents are the orangutans, which move through a free-ranging treetop network above visitors' heads — the zoo's long-running orangutan breeding programme is renowned, and the 'Breakfast in the Wild' experience lets you dine near them. Elsewhere, themed zones recreate habitats from the Fragile Forest biodome, where you walk among free-flying lemurs, sloths and butterflies, to the African savannah of zebras and giraffes, a white tiger enclosure, and the Frozen Tundra with polar bears and penguins. Elephant presentations, animal feeding sessions and keeper talks run through the day. Because the enclosures are designed to feel like the animals' real environments, the experience is as much about atmosphere as about ticking off species. Allow time to follow the looping trails at a relaxed pace; the zoo is large, green and shaded, and rewards an unhurried half-day or more.

The Mandai Wildlife Reserve

The Singapore Zoo is the best-known of several parks that make up the Mandai Wildlife Reserve, all clustered together, so you can combine them. The pioneering Night Safari, the world's first nocturnal wildlife park, opens in the evening and takes visitors by tram and walking trail through dimly lit habitats to see creatures active after dark — a completely different and atmospheric experience. River Wonders (formerly River Safari) follows the world's great rivers and is home to giant pandas, manatees and a huge freshwater aquarium. The newer Bird Paradise gathers thousands of birds in immersive walk-through aviaries. Each is ticketed separately, but combination passes covering two or more parks offer savings and let you build a full day (and evening) of wildlife. A common plan is the zoo or River Wonders by day, a break for dinner, then the Night Safari after dark. Together, the Mandai parks make this corner of Singapore a wildlife destination in its own right.

Getting There, Tickets and Hours

The Singapore Zoo lies in Mandai, in the north of the island, a fair way from the city centre, so allow travel time. Without a direct MRT, the usual routes are to take the MRT to Khatib station and ride the Mandai Khatib Shuttle, or to Springleaf station nearby, or simply to take a taxi or Grab, which is the quickest option (around 25–40 minutes from downtown). Entry for international visitors is around US$35 (about 48 dollars) for an adult, with discounts for children, and combination tickets with the other Mandai parks reduce the per-park cost. The zoo is generally open from about 8:30am to 6pm, with last entry earlier; the Night Safari opens separately in the evening. Buying tickets online in advance is recommended for the best price and a smoother entry. A tram loops the grounds to help cover the distances, included or available for a small fee.

Best Time and Tips

The Singapore Zoo is enjoyable year-round, but a few tips improve the visit. Arrive early, soon after the 8:30am opening, when the air is cooler, the animals are most active and the park is least crowded — by midday the heat and tour groups build. Wear light clothing, comfortable shoes and a hat, bring water and sun protection, and be ready for sudden tropical showers. Allow at least a half-day, or longer to see everything at a relaxed pace; families can easily spend most of a day here. To make the most of the journey out to Mandai, consider a combination ticket that adds River Wonders by day or the Night Safari in the evening, turning the trip into a full wildlife day. Check the daily schedule of feeding sessions and shows on arrival and plan your route around the ones you want to see. With its shade and greenery, the zoo handles the tropical climate better than many outdoor attractions.
