Gardens by the Bay Singapore
Singapore's Futuristic Garden
Gardens by the Bay is Singapore's spectacular waterfront nature park, and one of the boldest expressions of its 'City in a Garden' vision. Opened in 2012 on reclaimed land beside Marina Bay, it spreads over 100 hectares of imaginative landscaping, but its fame rests on two standout features: the soaring Supertrees, tree-shaped vertical gardens up to 50 metres tall, and two vast cooled conservatories sheltering plants from around the world under glass. By day it is a free, family-friendly park of themed gardens, lakes and sculptures; by night the Supertrees come alive in a free light-and-sound show that is one of the city's signature sights. Set against the backdrop of the Marina Bay Sands towers, the gardens blur the line between nature and architecture in a way found almost nowhere else. Whether you simply stroll the outdoor gardens or pay to enter the conservatories, it is a highlight of any Singapore visit.
The Supertree Grove
The Supertree Grove is the park's icon — a cluster of eighteen towering, tree-like structures whose 'canopies' are planted with ferns, orchids and climbers, and whose trunks glow with colour after dark. They are not merely decorative: several are fitted with solar panels and serve real environmental functions, from collecting rainwater to venting the conservatories. Each evening, the grove hosts Garden Rhapsody, a free sound-and-light show in which the Supertrees pulse in time to music — a few minutes of pure spectacle, usually staged twice a night and best watched lying on the ground looking up. For a fee, the OCBC Skyway, a 22-metre-high aerial walkway, links two of the largest Supertrees for a view over the grove and the bay, and a bar sits atop the tallest tree. Even without paying, simply standing among the lit Supertrees during the evening show is one of the most rewarding free things to do in Singapore.
The Cloud Forest and Flower Dome
The two glass conservatories are the park's ticketed centrepieces, and each is a cool, welcome escape from the tropical heat. The Cloud Forest is built around a 35-metre indoor mountain wreathed in mist and cascaded by one of the world's tallest indoor waterfalls; a winding walkway climbs through orchids, ferns and pitcher plants to viewpoints over the misty interior. Next door, the Flower Dome — listed as the world's largest glass greenhouse — recreates a cool, dry Mediterranean climate, with ancient baobabs, olive trees, succulents and rotating seasonal flower displays that change with festivals through the year. Together they showcase plants you could never grow outdoors in equatorial Singapore, beautifully presented and gently educational. A third attraction, Floral Fantasy, offers a smaller, whimsical immersive display. The conservatories are especially good on a hot or rainy day, and many visitors find the Cloud Forest's misty mountain the single most striking sight in the gardens.
Tickets, Hours and the Light Show
Entry to the outdoor gardens is free, and you can wander the Supertree Grove, the lakes and the themed gardens at no cost, including the evening Garden Rhapsody light show. The ticketed attractions are the conservatories (Cloud Forest and Flower Dome) and the OCBC Skyway: a combined conservatory ticket for international visitors costs around US$40 (about 53 dollars), with the Skyway and Floral Fantasy priced separately, and discounts for children. The outdoor gardens are open from early morning until around 2am, while the conservatories typically run from about 9am to 9pm (last entry earlier). The Garden Rhapsody show usually plays in the evening at around 7:45 and 8:45pm. Booking conservatory tickets online can save time and sometimes money. A typical visit of two to three hours covers the conservatories and the grove, but you could easily spend longer exploring the wider park, especially in the cooler morning or evening hours.
Getting There and Best Time
Gardens by the Bay sits beside Marina Bay, a short walk from the Marina Bay Sands, and is most easily reached via the Gardens by the Bay MRT station on the Thomson-East Coast Line, or Bayfront station with a walk across the dramatic Dragonfly or Meadow bridges. Taxis and Grab drop you at the entrance. The best time to visit is the late afternoon into evening: the outdoor heat eases, the conservatories are comfortable any time, and you can time your visit to end with the Garden Rhapsody light show after dark, with the Supertrees and the Marina Bay Sands lit up. Mornings are quieter and cooler for the outdoor gardens if you prefer fewer crowds. Many people combine the gardens with a visit to the Marina Bay Sands SkyPark and the waterfront Spectra show next door, making a full and spectacular evening around the bay. Bring water, sun protection and comfortable shoes for the walking.
